How do you differentiate "yeah" and "yes?"
My high school English teacher said "you cannot use "yeah" for teachers," However, in my collage, (in the U.S) a lot of student replies to instructor like "yeah, I think so" or "yeah I agree." Is there a criteria? If you have personal criteria, what is it like?

People don't really care. They sound so similar to begin with, and no one's a huge stickler for that kind of thing when you're in school. Just respect the teacher, and you're golden.

I use "yeah" for everyone (including teachers). There's no criteria.

Sometimes, when I want to sound extra polite and proper (maybe at a job interview, for example), I'll try to say "yes" but that's still rare.

It doesn't matter if you say "yeah" or "yes". It's how you say it that really matters.

I've heard someone say "yes" to me once and it sounded very disrespectful, so "yes" isn't always better.

If you're nice and polite, it will show.

You know, Since I had taught Japan-glish while i was in Japan, I always say "yes" and cannot use "yeah." Some of my friend says it's not friendly in the U.S. Is that true?

No, that's not always true. It still really depends on how you say it. Again, if you're a nice and friendly person, it will show whether you use "yeah" or "yes".

To be honest, it's better to say yes in an interview or in a professional setting like a press conference in my opinion.
