They have same meaning but "for ages" is more informal.

For a long time is self-explanatory I think, but an "age" is a specific time period like an era (ex. The Medieval Age) So "for ages" means over many time periods.

As @katiem415 mentioned, this is correct. Using "for ages" is therefore an exaggeration, which is probably the reason why it is more informal.
