Pergunta sobre Inglês (EUA)
Question about the phrase; to stretch the truth. This phrase sounds like "to change the truth by stretching it," but I understand that this is just a literal definition.
But if this way of defining the phrase is true, the "truth" might not be changed so badly, as the general meaning of "stretch" is merely to "extend something," and thus, stretching the truth just mean to "blow the truth out of proportion to the point where it is not genuinely accurate anymore but it still contains/maintains a fraction of its original meaning."
However, if the above interpretation of the phrase is incorrect, the meaning of "stretching the truth" would be to completely warp/distort the truth, insofar as it no longer leaves the essence of the original meaning.
What is your take on the essential meaning of this phrase?

To stretch the truth is to lie a little bit still telling the truth. For example a pain reliever claims that it lasts all day but that's only if you take the pill every several hours.

@lindsay19: Thank you, lindsay19! Yes, your answer "to lie a little bit still telling the truth" is exactly what I wanted to know about the phrase!
Speaking of which, in this case, is it ok to say "your answer is just what the doctor ordered"? Or is this idiom alway related to health or food?

Maybe over exaggerating like: I will die without this shirt meaning: that you won't actually die but you really want it

@hirofumi: "your answer is just what the doctor ordered"? means it's the best answer...not always related to health... what the doctor ordered implies its exactly what you need/the best...

@amb3rrs: Thank you for your clarification!! ^^ I always wanted to use the idiom "be) just what the doctor ordered," but I wasn't sure if what the "doctor" orders should be health promoting or not:)
