@Chisa1991 It's the subjunctive. You use "were" when you're talking about something that isn't true or you're being wishful.
However, it's common for Americans to use "was" in casual conversation.
A lot of English speakers can't tell the difference, so don't worry. Just make sure you use "were" in writing.
