No difference in meaning at all.
"I tried to go fishing..."
"I tried going fishing..."
The meaning is exactly the same, all that is changing is form.

"try Verb-ing" is mean to sample, you never do that in the past but now you want to do that ( The first time)
Example : The table is very heavy, i will try lifting it.
"try to Verb" is mean effort.
Example : I will have a test, so i try to study hard.

As a native english speaker both phrases mean the same exact thing. We wouldnt think a thing if you tried using one over the other.

"We tried lifting the table, but it didn't budge." is said it the present tense. This means it is currently happening. "We tried to lift the table, but it didn't budge." is when you are telling what happened in past tense; Something that happened earlier.

They are different parts of English grammar.
lifting = a gerund
to lift = an infinitive
Many students have expressed difficulties regarding whether to use the gerund form of a verb or the infinitive form. Deciding which to use is not always easy, but the more you read and listen to English, the easier it will become. Sometimes either the gerund or the infinitive form can be used, either with the same or different meanings, and sometimes there is only one form which is correct. In your question, "tried to lift the table" and "tried lifting the table" have the same meaning. I'll give you an example below of when the meanings can be different. I will use a different word in my example: smoke.
Let's make sure we are clear on what the difference between a gerund and the infinitive form of a verb is.
Gerund – a verb in its present participle form (-ing) which acts as a noun in a sentence.
example – "Stop smoking."
Infinitive – a verb in its base form preceded by the word "to".
example – "Stop to smoke."
In the example sentences above, both forms can be used, but the meanings are not the same. "Stop smoking." means terminate the action of smoking. "Stop to smoke." means stop an activity in progress for the purpose of starting the action of smoking.

Both have the same meaning. Ignore those who say otherwise.
