I'm not sure what 'a whole type of school of painting' means.
Does it mean 'a school that will teach you various type of painting'?

@Lin2n A type of school of painting is not a literal school that teaches you. "A type of school of painting" means a new type of painting was named after the town. By types of painting, I mean expressionism, cubism, realism, etc. So, a new style of painting was named after that little town.
