@Han0907 I'm not 100% positive that it's grammatically correct because I'm from America but I know that people in Britain use "sat" very frequently. For some examples you should watch some British Youtubers. You will notice that there are a lot of little differences between American English and British English.

There is a cake sitting on the counter is correct, the cake can't get up and leave so it is always sitting on the counter

It is a difference in which English you are speaking. If you're speaking British English then you would use "sat" but if you're using American English you would use "sitting".

Sitting is the present tense of the word sit. Sat is the past tense. If you are sitting you are currently doing said action. If you were sat you used to be sitting there,but now you are somewhere else.
