I am confused about the use of male and bene as seemingly adjectives instead of adverbs in some contexts. For example, in the sentence: “È meglio camminare, il traffico è male.” Wouldn’t male be an adjective in this case, as it is describing the traffic? Also in sentences that have “è bene” in them to mean “it’s good,” wouldn’t bene be an adjective, as it is describing the inferred “it”? I asked my Italian teacher a little bit ago if male and bene could ever be adjectives and he said they could not, so I am confused about their usage.

They indeed aren't adjectives, and "il traffico è male" and "è bene" aren't correct sentences.

You'd say "il traffico è terribile" or "c'è un sacco di traffico", and "va bene". "bene" means "well" and "male" means "badly", and only as adverbs.

@francescoghg what about in sentences like: “Ma è bene che i nostri giovani rimangano.” and “Ed è bene che il nostro prodotto ti renda soddisfazione.”

@ryanpb in this case, it's a noun: "è (un) bene che..." (something on the line of "it's a good thing that...) but it's kinda like a set phrase. Definitely not an adjective.

“Male” e “bene” sono avverbi semplici, e il significato di uno è il contrario dell’altro.
Con “male” si intende genericamente ciò che non è giusto, ciò che è sbagliato
Con “bene” ciò che è giusto/corretto.

La frase:
“È meglio camminare, il traffico è male.”
è una forma con la quale ci rivolgeremo a un bambino, (con il quale si tende a semplificare il linguaggio), per fargli capire che il traffico è qualcosa di sbagliato.
Quindi usiamo l’avverbio “male” nel suo significato base.

“male” e “bene” possono essere dei sostantivi (come scritto da @francescoghg).
