It doesn't make any difference, it should just be remembered that "entardecer" is used more in writing, poems, stories or short stories. "Ficar tarde" is more used in everyday life! Right? 良い研究 💞

Actually, I think maybe there is a slightly diference between them. Or at least, where I live we use them in different ways.
First, "entardecer" is more formal, or there are other ways to say the same in a more coloquial way. I don't hear people using it very often.
"Entardecer" in fact refers to sunset. So people could use it like "Oh, já está entardecendo!" (Oh! It's already dusk!). But it is more common to say "Oh! Já está escurecendo!" or "Oh! Já está anoitecendo!".
"Está ficando tarde" could be used in the same context of "entardecer", but "entardecer" could not be used in some contexts we use "está ficando tarde".
We use "está ficando tarde" in general when we notice hour is advanced, for example, when we notice that time to go home is approaching, or when you are working late in the night and notice that is already past your sleep hours, or even when you leave some place and see the sun going down.
Taking one of the examples above. If you are at your friend's house and you didn't notice time passing by, when you realize that you should go home you could say: "Oh, já está ficando tarde! Preciso ir para casa" (Oh! It's late! I need to go home). But in the same situation you couldn't say "Oh! Já está entardecendo! Preciso ir para casa" It wouldn't make sense. Brazilians probably would understand what you wanted to say, but it would sound very strange.
That is it. I hope It helps. :)

"ficar tarde" is the act of dusking expressed with a light verb and the adverb or (the least common) noun >tarde<
"entardecer" can be either act of GETTING LATE, expressed only with the verb, or TWILIGHT, DUSK (verb taking the form of a noun)
-- Vamos para casa, já está ficando tarde. (GETTING LATE adverb)
-- Olha o sol. Está 'ficando tarde'. (GETTING AFTERNOON noun)
-- Vamos para casa, já está entardecendo (GETTING LATE)
-- Que lindo entardecer! (TWILIGHT)
