They're mostly interchangeable, but, to me, there are cases in which “alguma coisa” sounds a bit vaguer than “algo”.
For example:
-- Algo está me incomodando.
Something is bothering me.
(I might be aware of what it actually is, but I didn't specify it)
-- Alguma coisa está me incomodando.
Something is bothering me.
(I might not be aware of what it actually is)
Also, “alguma coisa” can be pluralized, while “algo” can't.
-- Algumas coisas me incomodam bastante.
Some things bother me a lot.
There's no such thing as “algos”.

'algo' ou 'alguma coisa' querem dizer o mesmo.
O uso, é de acordo com o gosto da pessoa.
Para mim; 'algo' parecer masculino,
e 'alguma coisa' soa mais 'imaginário'.

Algo = alguma coisa
Penso que é mais usual "alguma coisa"
-Tem alguma coisa errada aqui.
-Aqui dentro tem alguma coisa.
-Tem alguma coisa queimando na cozinha.
-Ele tem alguma coisa... deve estar doente.
-Alguma coisa não está certa aqui.
