@neolarry Soda is not very common (I think I've only seen them say "soda" in movies). Usually we say "refrigerante" or simply the brand.. (we also say "refri", which an abbreviat for refrigerante)
- compra uma coca? (buy a coke?)
- vai ter refrigerante no almoço? (Will there be soda for lunch?)
but answering your question: there is no difference!! we just use other words... (although there is a soda that the brand is "soda", unfortunately it is not so well known)

Soda não é usado aqui no Brasil, mas se alguém falar soda provavelmente vai entender.Talvez alguém confunda com soda com soda cáustica.
Só para acrescentar, grande parte dos brasileiros encurta a palavra refrigerante só para refri, ficando mais fácil de falar.

Refrigerante e uma bebida gasosa, mas com mais açúcares! Já a soda, também uma bebida gasosa, mas com menos açúcares

Just to add some more information, at least where I live, "soda" is most commonly used as an abbreviation of "soda cáustica" (sodium hydroxide, lye), a chemical commonly used for cleaning when strong corrosion is needed.
