I'd say they're perfect synonyms when used with the meaning of "waiting".
Ex.
"Estou aguardando sua resposta."
"Estou esperando sua resposta."
Both stand for "I'm waiting for your answer". "Aguardar" sounds more polite, that's something you'd hear in a formal context such as a work e-mail. "Esperar" sounds more casual and is more common in daily-spoken language.
The only situation in which they're not interchangeable is when "esperar" takes up the meaning of "hoping".
Ex.
"Eu espero que você chegue cedo."
"I hope you arrive early."
In this case, you can't swap it for "aguardar" since "aguardar" doesn't have this particular meaning.

They are synonymous.
It's hard to explain the difference
Ele está aguardando o médico chamar.
Ele está aguardando os exames.
Eu estou esperando o ônibus
Ela está esperando um bebê.
Waiting has a sense of hope sometimes:
Espero que tudo dê certo! I wish you good things
Espero por este emprego há muito tempo.

@kimhs0l In my opinion, aguardando sounds a little more formal. But both options are natural.

@SIGARCEZ Thank you! What do you mean by "waiting has a sense of hope sometimes"? I guess you used an automatic translator and it messed it up ~

@i_am_not_a_robot this was a sharp explanation! So, when meaning to say that you are waiting for something, you'd use "esperar" in casual contexts and "aguardar" to add a pinch of politeness to your speech.
I didn't know about this other meaning of "esperando". It's clear now, thank you so much! ~

@Luizinho_ Thank you for explaining! Even though my question was regarding semantics and not the construction of gerunds, this was useful and illuminating! ~

@kimhs0l just in addition, esperar can also mean “to expect” and in this case you cannot use aguardar as a synonym.
- what did you expect me to do? (o que você esperava que eu fizesse?)
- I’m expecting a baby (estou esperando um filho)

@kimhs0l I meant that" to wait" can be translated as "to wish"
I wish you all the best! = Eu desejo para você tudo de bom. Eu espero tudo de bom para você.

Are synonyms. Both mean "wait" or "hope"
"Aguardar" sounds more formal
