In theory, "isto" means something that is close to the speaker and "isso" means something that is close to the listener.

As for the practical usage, we hardly ever use "isto" and say "isso" for both situations. "Isto" sounds too formal, at least to me.

@i_am_not_a_robot so "isso" is universally acceptable for normal conversation, but in a formal context like academic writing, etc, "isto" would be acceptable for the near-speaker things.

In conversation, most native speakers won't even differentiate between the two. It's pretty much what happens with "who" x "whom" in English. If you use "isto" in conversation, it would sound as unusual as using "whom".

I'd only use "isto" in a formal context.

Like people said before, "isto" means "this" and "isso" means "that", but in normal conversations we just say "isso". Everything I’m gonna say also applies for "esse(a) / este(a)" (but esse / este is used before nouns, and isso / isto is always alone).

If you want to precise if it’s near the speaker or the listener, you can say "isso aqui / isso aí (this here / this there):

-Isso aí é seu?
-De quem é esse carro aqui?

However, if they are referring to something already said, you will always use "isso / esse", and if it’s still going to be said, it’s "isto / este":

Fome e desemprego: Essa é a realidade de muitos brasileiros pós-pandemia.

Namorar à distância? Isso eu não teria coragem.

Escute isto que vou te falar: presta atenção para não ser enganado.

Estas palavras tiveram sua ortografia mudada: ideia, linguiça e jiboia.

Notice that "isso / esse / isso aí…" means "that" only when the object is near the listener, if it’s far away from both you have to say "aquilo" (or aquele / aquela before nouns).

Finally, these words can be used like the words "former" and "latter", but it’s the inverse. "Estr" means that something is close, ao it’s the closest one (so the last one mentioned), and "esse" means that it’s far, so it’s the first one:

Pedro e Maria não vieram à festa. Esta (Maria) porque estava doente, e esse (Pedro) pois ja tinha outro compromisso.

However this use is veeeery rare, and some people won’t even understand the meaning, but it’s worth mentioning :)
