the second one I would change to say - The stent could not be opened during the procedure"
They are very similar, so it is just a matter of how someone phrases things. Some doctors would say "I wasn't able to get the stent to open up during the procedure."

The second one is grammatically incorrect.
Corrected version: The sent could not be opened during the procedure.
The first sentence you gave and the corrected version of the second one you gave would be the most natural options that I can think of.

As you pointed out, the second sentence was incorrect. It should have been "The sent could not be opened during the procedure."
I heard that "can" is used for things. So, in this case, would "the sent could not be opened during the procedure." be better as the subject is stent?

@purie If you mean as a correct medical expression it doesn't matter. Doctor's really aren't into perfect english grammar when they are charting. Trust me, I work in medical records at a hospital.
