It means to reprimand but in a subtle/gentle way.
Like instead of just yelling, “why would you do that?! you need to do this!”
You could gently chastise by saying, “that may have been ok before but we need you to do this, OK?”

Okay, thank you. Would you consider this "gently chastise" :"What were you thinking, knucklehead?" and "I hope you learned your lesson, bonehead"? Someone told me that they were just gently chastising. I'm really glad if they're gentle. Or are they mean and insulting? Also the voice actor of the movie said: "how to scold yet be loving". Both sentences were from the movie Big hero 6

That could be gently chastising. If it’s between 2 people that know each other well, the tone of voice is friendly/helpful, and the intent is positive then I would say so.
But if you just yell at someone with those phrases it wouldn’t be gentle, in fact that would probably be abusive.

Thank you. Do you mind to watch these short clips just to clarify that you are correct? Or was the big brother mean and insulting? Thank you

That’s gray area for sure (meaning not simply one or the other) but then again that’s kind of the definition of gently chastising since chastising is a harsh reprimand.
I, personally, wouldn’t say he’s being mean or insulting since it’s coming from love (caring) and he does say things like, “you graduated at 13…” which is saying, “hey you’re smart and could be doing better things” so I would say it’s gentle chastising but another person might interpret that another way.

Thank you. So a person can be gently chastising even though he uses an insulting word like "bonehead" or "knuckehead"? In the other words, it can be gently when used words like "knucklehead" and "bonehead"?
And if you watched that other clip, the brother's tone was calm and relaxed so is it possible that "I hope you learned your lesson, bonehead" was just teasing or was it too a gently reprimand? Or was it both?
- Inglês (EUA)
Sounds like a bit of both. The knucklehead and boneheaded word choices themselves seem like teasing (probably been interacting with his brother like that for years). The rest is gently chastising yes

Okay, thank you. Have you seen the movie or did you get your interpretation based on those two clips?
- Inglês (EUA)
I have seen the movie a few times before (it’s a good one!) but I also watched both clips to refresh my memory.

Okay, thank you. And last question yet: do you think that Tadashi is still a kind and gentle brother even though he said "knucklehead" and "bonehead"?

Yeah no worries, in my opinion Tadashi is kind.
This is a complex concept. Chastising itself doesn’t mean that a person is mean or abusive. Humans get reprimanded/punished when they do wrong all the time, it’s normal.
By being kinder I just mean that, from a ‘is this gentle chastising’ perspective the name calling could have been omitted but often deeper insight is required.
It seems to me like that’s how their relationship works (this is common amongst brothers). In my experience (as a big brother with a little brother) when I used words like that it was teasing/playful.
Hiro also knows that he’s doing wrong and likely expects that his aunt and older brother are going to be upset.
To be very clear, I think Tadashi is a kind person and caring older brother (this is shown in his actions towards Hiro and in his action of creating baymax). This is also shown by the tone of the movie after his death. It’s clear that losing him has a negative impact on those who loved him (people who are abusive are not missed in that way).

Thank you really much. I hope I don't bothering you at all but I have yet a couple of questions. You talked about that Tadashi would have left "knucklehead" and "bonehead" out but you also talked about something about teasing/playful and that it's common amongst brothers. So does this mean that Tadashi was only teasing when he added "knucklehead" and "bonehead"? Not insulting? Sorry I just want to be sure
And I'm really glad when you said that Tadashi is a kind person and caring brother and it shows in his actions towards Hiro, so I ask this much yet: Does this "kind and caring brother" shows with that "What were you thinking, knucklehead?" and "I hope you learned your lesson, bonehead" sentences too?
And when you said that Tadashi is caring. Did you mean that he cares Hiro or that he is a kind person?
I'm so sorry I ask this much! Thank you!

No worries these are complex concepts.
Yea so in this case Tadashi likely uses those words teasingly and is just used to using them so that comes out naturally in the heat of the moment. They are after all on the run.
You have to take it all in, it’s not just the sentences and/or word choices alone. If Tadashi didn’t care he wouldn’t have followed his brother to the bot fight to make sure he was ok, he wouldn’t be trying to get him to go to college, etc.
With that said yes because of the caring actions that these phrases are accompanied by he is caring while saying them.

Okay, thanks really much :) That was satisfying :) I kind of see Tadashi as my big brother but ONLY if he didn't insult Hiro or wasn't mean and because it is clearly that Tadashi loves Hiro so much it would be very weird to insult someone who is loved. So Tadashi wasn't insulting and Hiro wasn't upset, right? :)
Did you watched that "bonehead" scene too? Was it also just teasing?
- Inglês (EUA)
Yeah I watched it all. I wouldn’t say Tadashi was insulting Hiro, and Hiro isn’t upset (he knows he did wrong and a reprimand is coming).
So right in the moment of the scene Tadashi isn’t teasing Hiro but those are names that he’s used to calling him when teasing him. So he’s not insulting Hiro but rather using phrases that have become “muscle memory” or due to repetition they become natural to use.

Okay, thank you. :) So you believe Tadashi uses those terms normally and often? And when Tadashi uses those terms (not in these cases in the movie) they are said with love and are only teasing, right?
I'm just really confused why to use "knucklehead" and "bonehead"? There are a lot nicer words in the world, like "sweetheart"
I guess Tadashi really uses "knucklehead" on daily basis because I found this:

Yes he uses them often and is lovingly teasing.
There are nicer words to use but there are a lot of people who interact with each other that way. It’s really up to them what they’re comfortable with.
Yeah so Tadashi refers to him like that before and sounds like it’s usual for them. Knucklehead and bonehead also aren’t always negative. The more I think about this I’m starting to remember my father coming up to me and saying things like hey knucklehead and being friendly/loving.

Okay, thank you. And in the movie Tadashi was just teasing :) Just tell me yet that is "bonehead" also a "gentle word"? Someone told me that it is harsher than "knucklehead". Do you agree with this opinion? But if Tadashi uses that "bonehead" only to be friendly, then it's fine :)
And last one question, I promise, when using "bonehead" and "knucklehead" by teasing , a person still can be friendly even those terms themselves aren't "nice"? In the other words Tadashi was nice when he used those terms in the movie and outside of the movie?
I'm sorry I ask this much!
- Inglês (EUA)
Bonehead and knucklehead mean the same thing. Basically a dumb person.
Yes a person can still be friendly using them. Depends on the relationship and inflection.
No worries
