@zaino Note that if you talk about animals or specifically about gender, we use "dişi" for 'female'
eg. Bir boğa erkektir ve bir inek dişidir. - A bull is male and a cow is female.
About 'bayan' and 'kadın' distinction, 'female' can be used for both of them according to the context:
eg. Öğretmenimiz her zaman bayan öğrencileri kayırıyor. - Our teacher always favours female pupils.
eg. İzleyicilerin yaklaşık yarısı kadındı. - Around half of the audience were female.
For personal titles, it is correct that "Bayan" can be used:
eg. Mr & Mrs Smith - Bay ve Bayan Smith
eg. ladies and gentlemen - Beyler ve bayanlar
However, we do not use "Bayan X" to talk about or talk to a woman. Instead, it is used as "X Hanım"
eg. Pınar Hanım, lütfen bana yardımcı olabilir misiniz? - Ms Pınar, could you please help me?
When you talk about "women" in general, we use both 'kadınlar' and 'bayanlar' in the same way. There is a debate about this:
Some people think usage of "kadın" is rude and prefer "bayan". Their reasoning is "kadın" implies something about 'age' as in she is not a 'girl' anymore.
Some people, on the other hand, do not like the word "bayan", and prefer "kadın". Actually this view is more common nowadays. They emphasize that it is not a shame to be a woman (kadın), and the claim of usage of 'bayan' out of politeness is humiliating. Note also that we have a verb as "baymak" which means "to turn somebody off, bore somebody (to death), to put somebody to sleep (with boredom)". They say "bayan" implicitly brings this verb to mind, as in someone who does the action 'baymak'

"Kadin" means female and "Bayan" means Mrs. or Ms. or Lady (there is just one word for all these meanings".
