Como é que se diz isto em Inglês (EUA)? I learned that when there are two kanji together they are read with the onyomi, but 死神 is read as shinigami, which I think is with the kunyomi. Is it read that way because it's like a ''compound word'' or you just have to memorise it?

they aren't always read with onyomi, some kanji compound words use kunyomi instead (or they use a mix)
for example
会社 uses only onyomi
台所 uses both onyomi and kunyomi
in your example, 死神 uses kunyomi for both
memorizing kun/on usage is a bad idea since it would take a lot of time, some words can have anywhere from 1 to 7 on/kun readings with many different combinations.
instead, just remember the vocabulary itself. drill vocabulary words you hear/see in different context
