@leavercellotti We don't really say "Madam" unless we are imitating you guys. "Ma'am" is said, more so in "the south" than anywhere else", as a respectful way to refer to a woman, especially if you don't know her name.
Excuse me, ma'am, do you know where the nearest bathrooms are?

@KevinF hi Kevin. Thanks a lot for your answer!
In France, 'madame' is commonly use to talk to a woman above 30 if you don't know her. Under 30 you'd be more likely to say 'mademoiselle'.
Many Brits would use it a bit more? But to me it sounds quite formal or old fashioned.
What would you call a waitress? 'excuse ma' am? '

@leavercellotti You're welcome :)
The age thing probably applies here too. I think most people would say "ma'am" for 30+ and "miss" for younger women and girls.
Excuse me, ma'am, could you bring us our bill please?
Excuse me, miss, could I get a refill on my drink?
But those only work if directly addressing the waitress.

@KevinF I've watched countless YouTube videos where they explain how to address men and women in the workplace (sir, Mrs, miss, Ms, etc) but I never found any clear 'rule of thumb' for the real world 😅
You've summarized it pretty well! 👍👍
