smell is just smell, any type of smell. So, when people say, "What is that smell?" it can be positive or negative. if I say, "Eww what is that smell?!" Yeahh obviously bad. but if I say, "Ooh~ what is that smell?" Then it's a good smell. depends on the tone and manner.
stench is a strong, unpleasant smell. This word is a noun.
ie) there's a stench in the air.
ie) There's a stench in the fridge.
stink is to have a bad smell, verb.
ie) That stinks. (Can sometimes mean "Oh that sucks.)
ie) Seafood is good, but it stinks.

Smell is also a verb. "I could smell the pie." Stench and stink both are used to describe a powerful odor. But like litewave27 said, stench is more powerful than stink.

Smell can be used as a verb (to perceive odor) and noun (sense of smell; an unpleasant odor)
Stench is a noun which means a strong and very unpleasant smell (the stench of rotting fish)
Stink can be used as a verb and noun and means the same thing as stench, however in informal speech stink can mean something that's unpleasant or scandalous.
