In a way yes :) in a business type situation or any formal situation it demonstrates how professional you are.
To say "put off" sounds like you don't want to do the task

It would depend on formality of a situation

for example
it is professional to say 'postpone' to your emloyer
put off is more of an informal conversation with friends, perhaps even close work mates
