Pergunta sobre Inglês (EUA)

I heard the idiom ‘shell out’ means to pay out or hand over (money).
My question is: When it comes to the word ‘shell’, all I’ve known about it was it means skin of clam. So the idiom’s meaning is so confusing to me. What does ‘shell’ mean here?
