Pergunta sobre Francês (França)
Bonjour.
Est-ce que tu dis « je suis étudiant » ou « je suis un étudiant? »
Je pense la règle qu’on utilise communiquer un travail est approprié mais mon amie française n’est pas d’accord.

To talk about yout profession / job / status, you have to use the structure:
Je suis + [profession]. (without article)
example: « Je suis étudiant / Je suis étudiante »
However, the following structures remain grammatically correct:
Je suis + un / une + [profession];
example: « Je suis un étudiant / une étudiante »
Je suis + le / la + [profession]
example: « Je suis l'étudiant / Je suis l'étudiante »
《 explanations 》
The meaning of these three formulations is different.
- "Je suis étudiant" is the expression of my profession/status, of what I do in life.
- "Je suis un étudiant" expresses the idea that I am a student among other students. The context must therefore indicate the existence of other students to use this formulation.
To explain the defined article, let's take the example of the teacher rather than the student. It's easier to find a concrete example:
- "Je suis le professeur" refers to a given situation. For example, it may be a given class for which the person speaking is the teacher. He is therefore the teacher of this class. The formulation can be used when there is a set of teachers: the French teacher, the English teacher, the mathematics teacher... If there is only one French teacher, we can say: "Je suis le professeur de français". If in this context there are several French teachers, we can say "Je suis un professeur de français".
