1) to the west of = to the right of
2) on the west of = not natural
3) in the west of = in the west of
3 is most natural
4) at the west of = 3)
1) Tajikistan is to the west of china.
2) In your other post someone said: I’m living on the west coast now. That’s not very natural. People would say I’m living in the west coast now.
3) I’m currently living in Harbin, northeast of China. I’m currently living in the northeast of China.
4) Right now I’m in Tibet. It’s at the west China. (It’s in the west of China- more natural, just a little)
I wrote a post similar to this before.
You can many time interchange “at” and “in” for locations.
Where are you?
I’m in a restaurant now.
I’m at a restaurant now.
For small locations that you can easily** walk around and see everything use “at.”
I’m at my house.
I’m at a restaurant.
I’m at the park.
For bigger locations that you can’t easily see or walk around the entire area use “in.”
I’m in the west of Beijing.
I’m in the north of China.
I’m swimming in the Pacific Ocean.
If you follow these rules it’s almost always more natural.
The only exception is a planet or moon
I’m on earth.
I’m on the moon.
I don’t know why 太奇怪了

Here is the answer I wrote: (thank god for Copy + Paste😂)
Someone asked:
“Everyone is playing with the smartphone in the train.” - Is this natural?
You can this sentence a few different ways:
1) Everyone in* the train is playing with their smartphone.
2) Everyone on* the train is playing with their smartphone.
3) Everyone is playing with their smartphone in* the train.
4) Everyone is playing with their smartphone on* the train.
They are all correct, but 1) and 2) is a little better because you want the (location or place) to be (beside or close to) the noun.
Everyone where?
Everyone on the train
3) and 4) sounds like the smartphone is on the train! (it is but we are mainly* talking about “everyone!”
The people are happy in the restaurant. (correct but)
The people in the restaurant are happy. (better and more natural)
people where?
people in the restaurant
—————
So when to use “in” or “on”
When something is moving****:
Car, taxi, truck, (if something is the size of a car, then always use “in.”
I am in a car.
I am in a taxi.
I am in a truck.
If the object is very small: bicycle, skateboard, motorcycle, then use “on.”
I am riding on a bicycle.
I am on a motorcycle.
He is riding on a skateboard.
If the object or thing is very big: train, (airplane=plane) then you can use both, “in” and “on.”
There are only 10 people on the plane.
There are only 10 people in the plane.
There are 100 people on the airplane.
There are 100 people in the airplane.
I think it is easier to remember by saying, “If it is really big (train, airplane) or really small (bicycle, skateboard) then use “on.”
If it is the size of a car, taxi, or truck, then use “in.”
——
Remember these rules are only for things that are moving.
Things that are not moving and you go inside: House, building, restaurant, gym use “in” or “at” (“at” is more natural and better)
I am in my house
I am at my house
I am in the gym
I am at the gym
I am in a restaurant
I am at a restaurant
For a town, city or country: use “in”
I am in Tokyo.
I live in Japan.
I know this may be very difficult, but even very very good English learners still make these mistakes!!
