Unless there is only one bench, and your listener already knows about the bench, you need to use “a” because you’re introducing it to the listener. There is a bench in the park and Emily is sitting on it. If you use “the,” you’re assuming your listener already knows exactly which bench you’re talking about - the (only) one in the park.

I had to answer to the question, looking at the picture on the paper of my English test.
In the picture, Emily is sitting on a/the bench.
5 points on the problem.
I got 3 points, because of ‘the bench’.
One teacher said ‘the bench’ is wrong, ‘a bench’ is right. Another teacher said we can not say ‘the bench’ is wrong.
I am confused. Of two teachers’, whose explanation is right?

It sounds to me like they agree with each other, and they are correct. You need to say “a bench” and not “the bench.”

You can only use “the” if both of you know about the bench. If you were pointing out Emily in real life, you could only say “the” if there was only one bench in the whole park and your listener was familiar with that bench already. Otherwise, you have to use “a.” Since you can’t assume that those things are both true here, I don’t think you’ll be able to get your points back unfortunately.

@JTOh both "the" and "a" are articles. "The" refers to a specific bench while "a bench" is general
