they basically mean the same thing, but "would" is a more conditional word, suggesting a little more ambiguity (it is possible that you still don't know what happens next), whereas with "was going to" there is no ambiguity and what happened next definitely did happen. if that is confusing its probably okay, no native English speaker would care if you used one or the other, they mean the same thing.
