Q: Hello.

I want to ask about "for a long time".

I know, it is commonly used in perfect tense.
But I saw some sentences like following one.

A.
"They look at each other for a long time time and then walk away."

On the other hand,

B.
They know each other for a long time.
is said it's grammatically incorrect,

C.
They have known each other for a long time.
is said it's grammatically correct.

What is the difference and what should I think of when I use "for a long time"?
A: It's the verb that's important here. In B it's grammatically incorrect because it should either be "They knew each other for a long time" or "They have known each other for a long time." "For a long time" is how long the activity was. With "they knew each other for a long time" it means in the past they knew each other but they no longer know each other. With "they have known each other for a long time" it means they met a long time ago, have been friends and still know each other today.

In A "they look at each other for a long time and then walk away" it sounds like something you'd read in a novel or the script of a play. It's present tense.

Does this make any sense?
Q: Can I use "ever" instead of "of all time" in this case?
- You're having the biggest problem of all time.
or
You're having the biggest problem ever.
A: yes! Using “ever” can even sound more natural 👍😄👍
