It means they are normal people. No different than anyone else.

You can also say that celebrities are often/always spoken ill of, but it sounds slightly unnatural (or perhaps a bit formal). More often, I think most Americans would say something like,
People often say bad things about celebrities. Or,
Celebrities often have bad things said about them in the press.

But again, to speak ill of someone or something is also correct, but of a higher "register" of language and not what one would typically use in a conversation with friends.
